SLMSMART SWITCH: MAKE HEALTHY FOOD DELICIOUS
As the last month of the SLMsmart 90-day Challenge approaches, we’re checking in with our faithful challengers to gauge their progress. All of the Challengers have followed the exercise, diet, and Synergy supplement guidelines closely in pursuit of their goals. We can’t wait to share the final results and commend our diligent Challengers for the leaps they’ve made toward better health. You will be amazed by the work they’ve accomplished. We can learn a lot from these individuals!
SLMsmart Challenger
LINDSAY PEPPER, UTAH
Sun dried artichoke chicken, pork barbacoa, lemon chicken, are just a few of the many SLMsmart Challenge friendly recipes Lindsay has drooled over since beginning her 90-day journey. Highly nutritious yet divine recipes can be found on the SLMsmart App and with an educated eye on the Internet. These meals are usually high in protein, low in carbohydrates, and include plenty of delicious veggies.
“I’ve done lots of other diets,” Lindsay said. “I was eating their pre-packaged food and I lost weight, but it wasn’t something I could keep doing. I like this because you’re still eating your own healthy food, so it’s attainable. It’s huge to still be able to look forward to food, because I love food.”
Lindsay, mother of two, said she isn’t the type who can meal prep every week and be OK eating the same things over and over again; however, she also doesn’t have time to spend hours on a meal. She said she frequents food blogs to find healthy recipes, but some of them are too intensive.
In previous diets, Lindsay said she felt restricted by only being able to eat certain things at certain times. Now, she can select a number of healthy options any time she is hungry. When these restrictive diets ended, she craved treats and all the other foods she felt she had been missing. Using the SLMsmart Challenge guidelines, Lindsay said she is so satisfied by the foods she is eating that she doesn’t crave junk foods.
“I never feel hungry,” Lindsay said, who has lost an impressive amount of weight thus far in the Challenge. “Another big is thing is that I like to go out to dinner and now I can go anywhere and still find something that fits my healthy lifestyle.”
Lindsay has also really clung to the SLMsmart Health Shake as her go-to breakfast. She said the protein drinks she has tried in the past were hard to chug down, but she loves both the chocolate and vanilla Health Shake flavors. All in all, she said Synergy products have helped her perform during workouts and really pushed her weight loss goals along.

Strict Audits Protect Quality Products
Before your shipment of Synergy products arrives at your doorstep, before the products are manufactured and packaged, and before the individual ingredients and final products are tested, Lynda Hammons, Vice President of Quality Assurance, investigates and scrutinizes the source that produced the product ingredients.
Several times per year, Lynda travels to destinations around the globe to visit Synergy WorldWide and Nature’s Sunshine Products vendors for routine audits. This is, of course, after the vendor has gone through a meticulous selection process, which evaluates their processes. About 90 percent of Synergy’s vendors pass Lynda’s audits, and the 10 percent that don’t have to prove they’ve corrected the issues found during the audit before doing business with Synergy again.
Thousands of steps are taken before a Synergy product reaches a consumer’s lips, but each step holds great importance considering the end goal: enhancing global health. There isn’t a measure Synergy would not take to ensure the safety and potency of its products. The fact that Synergy’s Quality Assurance team actually conducts regular vendor audits sets it apart. Countless companies rarely or never visit the sites where their product ingredients are harvested or manufactured.
“I’ve visited a number of vendors who are prepared to take me out to lunch and give me a tour of their facility,” Lynda said, “and they are amazed when they realize I am serious about doing the audit. There are a lot of companies out there that just aren’t taking the time to do these critical inspections.”
The vendor selection process begins in Purchasing. If a new product calls for never-before-used ingredients, Purchasing searches for vendors from China to Germany to California. The Quality Assurance team works with Research and Development as well as Purchasing to perform an onsite audit once a vendor passes the initial round of screening. Today, many of the company’s preferred vendors have been supplying raw materials to Nature’s Sunshine since its conception in the 70s.
“We don’t go for the cheapest, and we don’t switch vendors to get a better deal,” Lynda said. “We enter into our vendor relationships with the intent to have a long-term partnership with them, however, that doesn’t mean we stop testing the materials they give us. If we’ve been getting pure raw materials from a vendor for 40 years, it doesn’t matter. We still take the time to test every batch of product that comes into the manufacturing facility.”
New vendors must be audited before Synergy uses any of their materials, while existing vendors are audited every 2-3 years. Risk assessments based on country, material, and supplier, are conducted each year and play a part in deciding which existing vendors are due to be audited. China’s botanical vendors are deemed “high risk” when considering Synergy’s quality standards, which is why the Quality Assurance team visits often and will spend three weeks in 2016 auditing all of its China vendors.
Lynda and her team make their expectations clear before beginning an audit, and though Lynda is a stickler for quality, she wants the vendor to pass the audit and works with them to see how she can help them meet Synergy standards. Helping a vendor often includes giving them a product forecast, testing method expectations, and other specifications. This is why Purchasing and Quality Assurance request audit meetings before the actual audit begins. This is where vendor relationships are formed.
When Lynda begins inspecting a supplier’s facility, she makes sure that they follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), which is a system that was created to minimize the risk of any pharmaceutical production that cannot be eliminated through testing the final product. Synergy products are also tested and manufactured following GMP requirements. An audit lasts a minimum of eight hours, and the length of the audit largely depends on how difficult it is to extract or produce the needed material.
The process begins by overseeing every step a particular product goes through, starting with receipt of the material to warehousing. During this process, the facilities are evaluated, including the bathrooms where the availability of soap and hot water is confirmed. Vendors without access to hot water for proper employee hygiene fail immediately. Of course, the facilities need to be clean and well maintained. Then, the vendor’s quality control labs are evaluated to make sure that the vendor’s quality processes match Synergy’s. Before raw ingredients even reach the Nature’s Sunshine Products manufacturing facility, they’ve already been tested many times to confirm their purity and potency.
Perhaps the most time consuming part of vendor audits is assessing the vendor’s documents. Lynda asks for random sanitation, quality control, specification, stability, pest control, GMP training, employee training, calibration, validation, environmental micromonitoring, change control, and recall procedure documents, to ensure the vendor maintains consistent, clean, and safe manufacturing processes.
Lastly, Lynda speaks to the vendor about their green initiatives. What are they doing to be eco-friendly? What do they do with hazardous waste? How do they maximize their energy efficiency? How do they recycle? Are they involved in any sustainability projects? Synergy wants to partner with and support suppliers who are passionate about doing their part in preserving the Earth. Synergy’s Quality Assurance team doesn’t let vendors get away with anything. When vendors travel to the Nature’s Sunshine Products/Synergy WorldWide manufacturing facility, they are amazed, and they often tell Lynda that they wish they had seen the facility before their audit to fully understand what kind of a company they were up against.
“It’s wonderful to work for a company that supports every step in the quality process,” Lynda said. “We want to help as many people as we can with our products and opportunity, and in order to do this we cannot have anything but the best.”

Champion Boxer Discovers Power of Synergy Products
Professional boxer Malin Hermansson has been putting every ounce of focus into her training since her parents gave her a punching bag at 14 years old.
“Boxing is an incredibly intense sport and it suited me perfectly,” she said. “I needed an outlet for all of my energy, and that is what boxing did for me.”
She hung the bag on her front porch where she would jump around and hit it. It didn’t take long for her to fall in love with the sport. Her love of boxing strengthened from then on. Raised in Fagersta, Sweden, Malin didn’t waste any time in beginning her training.
“There are two important pieces to the puzzle for training,” she said. “Having the right people with you, and taking proper care of your body.”
Since making Synergy products a staple in her training regimen, Malin has even higher hopes for her athletic future and looks forward to what she will achieve using these products. Malin believes in Synergy products because they give her the “necessary push to take [her] martial arts boxing career to the next level.”
“Early on, I started going to an old abandoned school near my hometown for training,” she says. “The facility had a real underground feeling to it, the room was cold very old, but the team I worked with were fantastic… we spent a lot of time in that place.”
After continuing her trainings for some time, Malin had her first string of matches, and a few years later ended up in Karlstad where she joined the boxing club BK 1925. There she won three silvers and a gold, all in different weight classes. And her impressive qualifications don’t stop there. She has this impressive list of accolades to prove her talent:
- Falken Cup, Silver, 2009
- Mellansvenska mästerskapen, Silver, 2011
- Falken Cup, Gold, 2011
- Swedish Championship, Silver, 64 kg, 2012
- Swedish Championship, Silver, 54 kg, 2013
- Falken Cup, Gold, 2013
- Mellansvenska mästerskapen, Silver, 2013
- Golden Girl, Silver, 2014
- Swedish Championship, Silver, 60 kg, 2014
- Swedish Championship, Gold, 57 kg, 2015
- Nordic Championship, Bronze, 2015
Malin recently started training in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) after she moved to Örebro and it is quickly becoming a new love for her. She currently represents Örebro Boxing Club and is involved in comprehensive training both in and out of the ring. Malin has big plans for herself and we look forward to supporting her to greatness!

READY FOR SPRING CLEANING?
At about this time every year, sunshine leaks through windows revealing the dust that accumulated during the winter months on shelves, windowsills, and baseboards. Much like the interiors of our homes, our bodies deserve just as much attention.
Now is the perfect time to do a little biological spring cleaning! SLMsmart Body Cleanse is a clinically tested formula that will detoxify your body so that you can absorb optimal nutrition from the healthy selection of foods in your diet.
In addition to using this powerful formula, try these in-season, high-fiber vegetables that will enhance your internal spring cleaning and get you on track to better health:
ARTICHOKES
Eating one artichoke fulfills an entire day’s fiber requirements. Because artichokes are high in fiber that help control constipation as well as preventing the risks associated with absorbing the toxic compounds in some foods.
ASPARAGUS
Rich in glutathione, asparagus has the ability to break down harmful compounds, such as free radicals. The spear-shaped vegetable also ranks high in antioxidants, which are known to neutralize free radicals and save cells from the damage these intruders may cause.
FENNELL
This crunchy, sweet veggie is a fantastic source of fiber and can potentially remove toxins from the colon. Its high folate content give it the properties to convert homocysteine—a dangerous molecule that damages blood vessels—into more gentle molecules.
ONIONS
For centuries, people have been using onions to reduce inflammation. Like asparagus, onions are free radical scavengers and are beneficial to gastric function. The quercetin found in raw onions is more potent than quercetin acquired through tablets and is said to protect against oxidative stress.
SPINACH
This vibrant, fresh green brightens up anything from a smoothie to an omelet. It’s rich in glycoglycerolipids, which can help protect the lining of the digestive tract. It contains an astounding amount of Vitamin K and has anti-inflammatory properties.
WATERCRESS
Quit using watercress as a garnish and start eating it by the forkful. Containing 200% of the daily recommended Vitamin K in just one cup, watercress improves bone health and calcium absorption. Try adding watercress to pesto or pasta sauces for nutritious dishes.

Enjoy the Equinox
Yesterday, March 20, was officially the first day of spring. Don’t let the groundhog tell you any different!
What truly determines the start of spring is the Vernal Equinox, the day that sun shines directly on the Earth’s equator. The Vernal Equinox occurs when the duration of the night and day are nearly equal.
So let’s celebrate this angle of the Earth’s axis and the beginning of a warmer season. Dust off your barbecue, bring the lawn chairs out of the shed and polish your sunglasses. This will be the best spring, summer, and year you’ve ever had!
DON’T FORGET: YOUR SKIN NEEDS ATTENTION
Your skin has been enduring cold outdoor air, indoor heat, and less sunlight all winter long. Now, as the earth passes its Vernal Equinox, that winter-damaged skin will soon face increased temperatures, greater UV exposure and the side effects that come with fun in the sun.
The TriAction System is Synergy’s most comprehensive line of facial care products. Each product has been formulated to strengthen and protect your skin. Now, just in time for spring, you can get yours at a savings of over 15%.

Hughes Center Studies Dissected: What is Myeloperoxidase?
Scientists at the Hughes Center for Research and Innovation announced two groundbreaking ProArgi-9+ discoveries in 2015 that Synergy Team Members all over the world have been talking about.
CLICK HERE to read the full descriptions of these discoveries.
One of these studies addresses the effects that ProArgi-9+ has on reducing the oxidation of LDL cholesterol. And the cause for oxidation? Myeloperoxidase (MPO).
The last sentence of the second study conducted states, “The Hughes Center’s preliminary study discovered that the unique combination of ingredients found in Synergy’s ProArgi-9+ potently inhibited myeloperoxidase and helps to reduce the oxidation of LDL cholesterol.”
So far, we know myeloperoxidase negatively effects nitric oxide production, but what is it exactly? And how exactly does it operate? With answers to these questions, we can gain a better understanding of why it’s important to keep myeloperoxidase from running its course.
MYELOPEROXIDASE: BOTH FRIEND AND FOE
MPO is an enzyme produced by white blood cells and is used to fight infection. MPO produces oxidizing compounds similar to bleach to kill infecting bacteria. The problem arises because the antimicrobial hypochlorous acid—an infection-fighting substance—kills both foe (bacteria) and friend (healthy tissue). This causes the oxidization of tissues.
Scientists at Synergy WorldWide have been evaluating natural inhibitors of myeloperoxidase as a nutritionally therapeutic approach to support cardiovascular health.
Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Matthew Tripp said, “We discovered that certain ingredients in Synergy’s ProArgi-9+ are indeed natural MPO inhibitors and work together synergistically. This unexpected discovery led to the filing of a provisional patent application on ProArgi-9+.”

Why Meal Replacements?
You’re busy. So busy, in fact, that you hardly have time to grab lunch between errands, meetings, and other obligations. Restaurants and grocery stores are filled with unhealthy food, and when you’re in a bind, grabbing the quick, overly processed lunch seems to be the only option that fit your schedule. But thanks to products like Synergy’s SLMsmart Health Shake, people are finding ways around these issues.
Thanks to meal replacements like Synergy’s SLMsmart Health Shake, people are finding a way around this debacle. Meal Replacements aren’t consumed solely for weight management anymore, they are viewed as a no-hassle meal that supplies complete nutrition. In addition, adding protein and meal replacement powders to other foods is growing in popularity.
For these reasons, meal replacement sales continue to grow as lives become increasingly busy. In fact, by the year 2020, this segment of the industry is expected to rake in a whopping $9 billion in sales. Take a look at these encouraging stats from 2015:
- $7 billion – Amount spent on meal replacements
- $3 billion – Meal replacement sales in North America
- $2 billion – Meal replacement sales in Asia
- $1 billion – Meal replacement sales in Europe
Euromonitor also states that a current trend is categorizing meal replacements as a whole food option because manufacturers are creating formulas using all-natural ingredients. Taking this one step further, SLMsmart is not only made with natural ingredients, it’s made with natural ingredients that are tested for impurities of every kind before being released into the market.
Today, consumers are more concerned about the types of supplements and products they are consuming than they ever have been before. For this reason, SLMsmart Health Shake is the perfect solution for the health conscious, the protein-seekers, the busy bodies, the dieters, and more.
